Messi: My substitution against Ecuador may not be the last... and I am happy to share Suarez's number

Lionel Messi revealed that he felt a little tired during the match against Ecuador in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Messi led Argentina to victory over Ecuador with a free goal, while he asked to be substituted in the 89th minute.

Messi revealed on the Argentine channel TyC: “We were playing against a strong team that showed that they have very good and physically strong players.”

He stressed, "We know that in every match we have to give 100% to continue. We know that the current group of players will not rest, and this is a historic matter."

He continued, "There will certainly be difficult matches, such as today's match, and also defeats, but we have to stay on our feet."

He added, "You always have to think about what's next, and therefore we do not plan to stop after winning the World Cup. What we have done has already happened. We have to look forward."

When asked about the secret of his replacement, Messi replied, "I was a bit tired, and that is why I asked for a change, and perhaps this will not be the last time."

He continued, "But I feel good, but it is a very difficult and physical match."

As for the top scorer in the South American qualifiers, he said: "It is my pleasure to share the top scorer in the history of the South American qualifiers with Suarez."

Messi concluded his remarks, "I think it is very wonderful for us with what the qualifiers mean."

Messi shares the top scorer for the South American qualifiers for the World Cup, with 29 goals, equally with Luis Suarez.
